Towards a Common Food Policy for the EU

Following 5 policy labs in Brussels and 4 local labs around Europe, the process culminated in the EU Food and Farming Forum (EU3F) in May 2018, where reform proposals were co-developed by 250 food systems actors. Drawing on these ideas, the final report in January 2019 will identify the shifts in the EU’s governance architecture that are required to guide a transition to sustainable food systems. It will also put forward a concrete vision of what policy integration for sustainable food systems might look like in key areas (e.g. Healthy Diets; Trade & Development).

Public policies are failing to respond to the challenges in European food systems. A 'Common Food Policy' is required to bring a range of poorly aligned policies (agriculture, trade, environment, development, food safety…) under one roof, to refocus them on clear and consistent objectives, and to drive a transition to sustainability. In May 2016, IPES-Food launched a three-year process of research and reflection to co-develop a Common Food Policy vision.
